Co-housing originated in the 1960s in Denmark due to a lack of satisfaction amongst families for their exisiting housing. They felt a that their communities could not meet their needs.

The first known modern co-housing community was Sættedammen. This was created by a group of 50 families in 1967 after reading an article called 'Children Should Have One Hundred Parents' by Bodil Graae.

Shorty afterwards this theory was introduced to North America by two American architects, Charles Durrett and Kathryn McCamant, after visiting several co-housing communities in Denmark.

Other existing and forming communities began to embrace the co-housing concept into their own lives. Examples of this were Sharingwood in Washington state and N Street in California

Most co-housing communities focus on engaging and developing a multi-generational community and being environmentally conscious.

The first co-housing in America was Muir Commons in Davis, California, by architects, Kathryn McCamant and Charles Durrett.
